HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Throughout high school, I was on the fast track to becoming a doctor. It was what I wanted to be since I was old enough to make rational decisions. I received a scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and chose to accept, despite my undying devotion to the Duke Blue Devils. The summer before I was to head off to college, I decided that I no longer wanted to be a doctor. I delved into philosophy, art, and anything having nothing to do with the subjects of science and math, with which I had grown so familiar. I was completely out of my element, though I had always been an artist at heart. With my cheap Canon film camera and an even cheaper lens, I photographed an anti-war rally on campus. Then I took a film class, during which I directed, produced, edited, and starred in a three minute homage to an assigned film. Little did I know, I had already been bitten by the photo/video bug.

I eventually left Chapel Hill for a short detour in Raleigh before finding a home in Wilmington, North Carolina. I spent some of the best years of my life at the UNC-Wilmington. I immersed myself in their Film Studies program, shooting super 8 film, filming 16mm shorts, and digital narratives as well as documentaries. I made a handful of lifelong friends, and I made a decision to turn my passion into my career. I shot my first wedding in early 2006 for my then roommate as a wedding gift. From there, I shot weddings whenever I could, on my own for next to nothing, and freelance for a national company. With a name in hand, Moving Art Productions quickly became more than I could have imagined in such a short amount of time. Chad has been with me since the beginning, and I knew I had to incorporate his natural eye for capturing moments. I believe that you can teach anyone how to 'use' a camera, but you cannot teach the natural ability to compose and capture art. Either you have it or you don't, and I surround my business with only those who do. Five years later, here we are, doing what we love to do for a living and very grateful for that.
